Internet Connectivity

We are pleased to announce that a limited number of WIFI Hotspot devices are available for checkout to families with financial need that do not have Internet access at home. These WIFI hotspots provide filtered Internet access to student technology devices for instructional purposes only and comply with the Children’s Internet Protection Act (CIPA).

Consideration for Hotspot checkout will be based on the following criteria:

• No Internet access at home of student
• Participates in Free or Reduced Meals Program

Please note that due to the limited amount of devices, only one hotspot will be issued per qualified household at this time.

There are two ways to charge your mobile hotspot.

Charge with a USB power adapter

1. Connect a USB cable between the device and the head of the adapter and plug it into a power socket to start charging.
2. When the device is powered off, it takes about 3 hours to fully charge the battery.

Charge with a USB connection to computer

1. Charge the device by connecting it to a PC with the USB cable.
2. When the device is powered off, it takes about 4 hours to complete charging using this method.

Note: When the red battery indicator flashes, the device should be charged in order to protect the battery.

1. Power on your mobile hotspot by holding down the Power key for 3 seconds until all LED indicators illuminate in blue.
2. From a Windows device, left-click the wireless connection icon on the task bar to view available networks and select the Device SSID Network Name from the list of available networks.
   
   Note: The Device SSID Network Name for your mobile hotspot is located on the label affixed to your device.

1. From a Chromebook device, right-click the Wi-Fi Connection icon 
     and select the Device SSID Network Name from the list of available networks.
   
   Note: The Device SSID Network Name for your mobile hotspot is located on the label affixed to your device.

1. On your mobile device, enter the password, which is also located on the hotspot label.

These hotspots are rated for 5 to 8 user connections.

Data is provided through T-Mobile. Each month, the device will receive unlimited data with the following speeds: 2GB of high-speed data, followed by data at reduced speeds up to 128kbps.

You may keep your KISD issued hotspot for this academic school year. Please return the hotspot if you acquire other Internet service before the year ends. 

Hotspots may be returned to the KISD administration office or your campus office.

If you experience any issues with your device, please call the T-mobile support number on back of the hotspot. If you still need help, contact your campus librarian.

Most Cell carriers are offering Mobile Hotspot connectivity with larger data caps or no data caps during the COVID-19 situation. Some carriers may even offer to activate an old cell phone for this use with the ability to cancel without penalty when the crisis is over.

Most old devices that have been stashed away in a drawer or box, can be brought out, charged up and once connected to your WiFi or Mobile Hotspot become an instant device with internet access.

The Texas Cable Association released information on free broadband and internet services here, describing steps to enable and expand access to broadband. All four Texas Cable Association members have pledged to not cut off broadband or telephone service to any customers, even those unable to pay their bills; waive late fees incurred because of their economic circumstances related to the coronavirus pandemic; and open their Wi-Fi hotspots to all.
